Plan label design
Information to consider when designing a label.
When designing a label, keep the following considerations in mind.
Question | Information |
---|---|
What information do you want on the label? | Determine which items on your label will be constant (i.e. your company's return address) and which will be variable (i.e. a product #, P.O. #, or customer/vendor information). Text (such as field identifiers, company names, or other static information) is a fixed part of the label template and is not considered data. Data and barcode fields are constant or variable data and are defined in the Data Dictionary. |
Where is the information for the label stored? | The Label Data Dictionary identifies the type of information that is fed into the label template. You need to know the source of the information and how it is accessed. If you are selecting certain fields from a database, get a list of the fields and their maximum sizes. Also be sure that you know the format of the source file (ASCII, delimited). The data in the incoming request prints to the labels based on the information you indicate within the Label Designer and the Label Data Dictionary.

How do you want to divide the information for ease of reading? | Determine the layout of your label before you begin. This makes the design process more efficient. For example, will you have a box for the customer address? A company logo? A return address? Decide where label elements will go ahead of time. |
What type of barcodes do you want on the label? | EPP can add 1D (one dimensional) barcodes (vertical lines) or 2D (two dimensional) barcodes (vertical lines with horizontal variances). You also can choose what symbologies to use and the dimensions of the barcode. |
How big will the label be? | You can adjust the actual dimensions of the label to fit the label paper or cutting dimensions. You need to know the exact height and width of the label so you can design the printing accordingly. |
Are there any industry standards to which you need to adhere? | You need to know if there are any industry standards for the labels you are creating, such as placement and type of information required. Some standard labels have been included for your reference. You have the option of changing these to include your own information, while maintaining the same basic structure for compliance.
|
Do you need GS1 (UCC/EAN) formatted data? | GS1-128 and GS1 DataMatrix barcodes and symbols require that the data be assembled in a particular way. |
Which printer do you want to use to print the label? | Printers vary in their capabilities such as the fonts they can print and sizes of labels. It is important to know the parameters of your printer. Changing a printer could require you to redesign certain elements of a label. You can map a label template to additional printers allowing the labels use on more than one type of label. More information about Printer Mapping is available in Mapping Labels to Additional Printer.
|
How is your computer connected to the printer? | When you configure your printer(s), you need to know how your computer is connected to the printer, whether directly connected, through a network, or through a print spooler. |
