About developing apps
Mobile Enterprise Platform includes the following tools that enable you to develop apps that are used to provide and collect data. These development tools are part of the Develop module, which is accessed in Platform Manager.
Instead of using multiple processes to record data, apps can be created to collect the data according to business practices. Automation helps streamline the process of collecting data by simplifying data entry and collecting data conveniently and efficiently.
Mobile apps, such as sales order and service order applications, can be implemented using Application Studio and the form and wire editors in Develop. Styles and style groups can be designed to be used on forms for uniformity.
Device database table definitions can be created for tables that are used on devices to provide the structure for device data replication. These device database tables correspond to registered tables from the enterprise system.
Develop also includes the components to register database tables in the enterprise system that are to be referenced in apps, to register business functions that are used as an interface between the system and the enterprise software, and to test business functions. Tables must be registered and functions must be registered and tested before creating apps.
The Develop section is comprised of the following components.
Connectors
Connectors, which are specific to an enterprise system, transmit data among system components and between the system and enterprise software. Connectors in the system are determined by the system configuration. Functions can be registered connectors, depending upon the system software license. Before functions can be registered to a connector, settings must be configured for the connector in Connector Settings in the Configuration sub-menu in the Admin category. Functions can be tested from the Registered Functions page in Connectors.
Table Registration
Registering database tables gives the system access to the database tables during processing. Database tables must be registered in order to reference a table from an external database in an app.
Device DB Tables and Views
If planning to replicate data to devices, a device database table definition is associated with a registered table from the enterprise system. The ID of a device database table definition must match the name of the registered table. Device database table definitions are specific to an environment, just as registered tables are specific to an environment. Device database views can also be used.
It is possible to have device database tables and views that are not associated with registered tables and are used for purposes other than device data replication. In that case, the ID of the device database table or view does not need to match a registered table.
Application Studio
Application Studio is an app creation tool used for writing apps that run on programmable devices. Instead of using a complicated programming language, this tool can be used to write apps through an easy-to-use interface. Apps are used to collect data for business functions pertaining to distribution, warehousing, and manufacturing and to implement mobile applications for employees in the field.
Application Configuration
Configuration of apps is a feature within the Advanced Inventory Platform Manager that allows app administrators, developers, and users to alter the behavior of certain app elements without requiring the app developer to make changes to each individual app. The System Administrator sets values for configuration elements, or keeps the default value, for each app in Application Configuration.
Styles
Style Groups can be created with default properties for certain form controls. A default style will be applied to forms. The properties of the controls use the default, or they can be overridden. Additional style groups may be created, and then applied to a form in the form editor. Style groups allow a forms developer to create a standard for the properties of form controls for uniformity. Forms that are imported will retain their original properties as an override. These can be changed to use a property from the style group, or kept the same. Properties vary by control. A default style group will be applied. The default style group properties can be overridden or applied.
